Spring has finally surfaced in Regnum, the mass amount of ice and snow slowly beginning to vanish as the flowers take over. Though the rivers still contain some ice and many buildings have fallen to ground due to the earthquake, the colours of spring has managed to make the place seem a tad bit peaceful. Perhaps it's a sign that things will be getting better again soon.

It came so suddenly and without warning throughout the dead of the night: A sudden pulse throughout the city, followed by another and another. By the time people knew what was happening, a large earthquake shook the city, causing buildings to tumble, grounds to crack and shift and, worse of all, the city borders to collapse. Many lives were lost, others injured and lives completely changed forever.

The power plant in Regnum is still down, but some groups have gotten together with electric Pokemon to help restore some of the electricity to the city. It is suggested not to walk the streets alone as the crime rates have sky rocketed despite the efforts of the Enforcement Wing. Phones and internet is still down, but people have started finding other ways to communicate for the time being. In good news, the weather has begun to warm up, the snow and ice finally melting. Sadly, the barrier is still blocking people from leaving the city.

    Nature: Gentle
    Height: 4’11”

The first pokemon Ren ever caught. A dear friend of his that he has come to see as a brother. Incredibly friendly, almost to a fault, and loves making pals with anyone that would have him. Has been inspired by his partner’s samurai training and has taken to fighting like one of those warriors himself, using his uniquely sharp horn the same way one would use a sword. Has a nasty tendency to bite grass types, or really anything green he sees.

    Emergency Exit
    Nature: Bold
    Height: 7’2”

One of the two pokemon Ren received from his parents. The oldest of the team. Sees himself as the pack father and frequently goes out of his way to keep the ‘kids’ in line. This extends to Ren, whom he frequently hassles when he’s overworking himself. Slightly vain, and has an obsession with showing his skill and keeping his carapace shiny. Was one of Ren’s mentors as a child, and had a hand (or claw) in training him into the warrior he is today. Has a fierce rivalry with Gunba.

    Speed Boost
    Nature: Sassy
    Height: 8’2”

One of the two pokemon Ren received from his parents. The second oldest of the team. Has an incredibly sour personality and is frequently annoyed with her partner’s antics. Despite this, she secretly cares a great deal for her human and their team and acts as the pack mother, protecting them no matter what the cost. Frequently serves as transportation for Ren, much to her chagrin, and has a nasty tendency to buck him off her back when she annoys him. Has a fierce rivalry with Daisho.

    Compound Eyes
    Nature: Impish
    Height: 0’4”

Captured in Regnum to follow an Ōishi tradition of using insect silk native to the client’s land for their clothing. Readily gives Ren her silk, on the condition that she can help craft the clothing. Has become a stickler for the details, refusing to make anything she considers second rate. Can be a bit of a prankster either by crawling into places she shouldn’t be or by making faulty clothing for clients she finds detestable. Often hides in Ren’s hair or in his suits.

    Nature: Relaxed
    Height: 3’11”

An oddball of a pokemon Ren had picked up. Has a tendency to pop out of his pokeball and plant himself in inopportune places so he can take naps, such as the door to Ren’s home. Generally only moves when offered food, his only other favorite thing aside from napping. Despite his tendency to laze, he’s an incredibly loyal guardian of the other pokemon on Ren’s team, and will drop everything to protect his friends from harm with his hard body.

    Flame Body
    Nature: Jolly
    Height: 3’7”

A pokemon of incredible kindness Ren saved from Regnum’s black market. Despite her poor history with them, she loves humans, particularly when they’re giving her attention and cuddles. Frequently lays on the laps of Ren’s clients and heats up so they can relax comfortably while they wait for their orders. Looks up to Kabuto, Gunba, and Daisho and hopes to one day be as strong as them so she can protect her family as well.

The Ōishi family history is long and incredibly confusing, with some reports claiming they first formed in a land called Ransei (which historians and geographers debate as to whether or not it ever truly ever existed). Regardless of their origin, the Ōishi gained particular prominence in the lands of Johto and Kanto, where they were regarded as a family of expert blacksmiths, luxury tailors, and, most famously, fierce warriors who excelled in swordplay. To put it in simpler terms, the Ōishi were samurai, and amongst the best of their kind at that. They were a valiant warrior house that would willingly sacrifice their lives to uphold justice and virtue throughout the lands. According to the stories, the Ōishi would never wield a blade for a cause they found irreprehensible, a fact that caused political turmoil when a cruel, affluent noble offered the samurai great wealth to fight alongside them against a beloved king they served. When they refused, the noble attacked the family, and after a long conflict, devastated the clan and used his political power them from ever picking up a sword again. Through the eyes of history, that was the official end of the Ōishi as warriors.

Yet that was not the complete truth. As far as the public needed to know, the Ōishi did indeed give up the blade in favor of working steel and thread, but in secret the remnants of the clan continued to hone their swordwork and offer those services under the table. However, considering how their ancestors’ petty code of honor nearly got the clan destroyed, the current Ōishi decided they had no compulsion against doing the dirtiest of work at the behest of whoever paid the most. This made the Ōishi valuable bodyguards, soldiers, and assassins to the ruling class, and after gaining infamy for the successful campaign of revenge against the noble that tried to destroy them, they started accepting jobs from aristocrats from all around the world. In time, the Ōishi regained their standing in the public eye as world renowned high class couturiers--yet the few affluent enough to see beyond the facade would recognize the Ōishi as deadly killers available to anyone with enough coin.

Ren was born in Johto, his birth rife with controversy since his mother, was a full blooded Ōishi that had her child with a client from Kalos she had fallen in love with. It was only thanks to his mother’s high standing in the clan and the Johto blood in his father’s ancestry that allowed Ren to stay in the Ōishi. Ren was laden with many expectations, and constantly reminded he had to not just meet the standards of his peers, but excel beyond them, lest he be shamed because of the circumstance of his creation. Luckily for him, Ren was eager to prove his worth and quickly showed he was a natural at art of thread and steel, tailoring beautiful, bespoke garments as well as he could hold his own in a sword fight.

However, Ren was different from his fellow Ōishi, and not only because of the circumstances of his birth. While most of the clan were taught from birth to be mercenary and detached from the work they did, Ren’s mother, Masako, was different. She was raised on the stories of the Ōishi’s virtue before they were forced to hide in the shadows and believed that their honor as samurai was tarnished by their pragmatic outlook on life, and yearned for the days where they could protect the meek and deserving once again. Ren’s father, Duke Dorian Brunet, himself descended from Kalosian knights, also influenced his son’s way of thinking by emphasizing the importance of being a gentleman above all else, teaching him that protecting one’s own honor meant ensuring the life and happiness of others, and that he should be an example to those around him. Soon Ren started to see being a samurai and being a gentleman as one and the same and yearned to walk that path of nobility himself.

Dorian traveled across the world due to his charity and relief work and was frequently targeted for his wealth and status, which meant that Masako could take the job of being his ‘tailor’ and bring Ren along with her to train him, allowing the family unit to stay mostly together. During this time, Ren he was assigned odd jobs wherever the family had been stationed by the Ōishi grandmasters, mostly in actual tailoring and occasionally in security detail. Though he was incredibly young, he did his work with aplomb and rarely had any complaints beyond his tendency to talk back to his clients. Back then, however, Ren had a tendency to stop short of actually killing anyone, as he found the finality of the act uncomfortable and dishonorable. For a time, this wasn’t an issue... until his father’s work took the family to Regnum.

Ren was assigned by the Fiores, a crime family, to assassinate the widow of a man who had evidence that could put some members of the family behind bars as a means of wrapping up loose ends. This was supposed to be Ren’s big break, the job that would formally induct him as a working member of the clan. However, the boy was unable to go through with the murder, finding the act far too detestable and ignoble. He instead went out of his way to protect the woman and brought her to police protection. The Fiores were furious, but their anger was shared in full by the Ōishi grandmasters, who were enraged that one of their own, a half breed they had given so many opportunities at that, tarnished their reputation. In retaliation, the Ōishi told Fiores the name of the warrior that had failed them. Using that information, the crime family tracked the boy and his family down. Masako and Dorian tried to protect Ren, but in time their numbers overwhelmed even her. All his parents could do was try and hide their son. Before they perished, they told Ren that they loved him, and were proud of the choice he made. Saving that woman was what a true Ōishi would have done-- a true gentleman.

Ren watched as the Fiores killed his parents right before his very eyes. A member of the family almost found and would have killed Ren as well, had he not been lucky enough to reach his sword. Ren took his very first life escaping the grip of that man, and that deed, accompanied by the deaths he saw that night, still haunt him to this very day.

From then on, Ren swore he would achieve justice over the Fiores, and he would do it with honor. Yet he was barely a teenager when his parents were taken from him, still incredibly inexperienced, and knew that he would never be able to defeat them unless he trained. And so he swore to use the Ōishi texts his mother had brought with her to teach Ren to teach himself, and would use the seedy underbelly of Regnum as his proving ground that would forge him into the man capable of crushing his hated foes.

It was during this time that Ren found a friend-- a boy named Takashi Amori. He, too, had been a victim of Regnum all of his life, serving as courtesan for the Saints before being pawned off into a life of servitude to the Fiores. They shared a righteous anger, and if anything Ren felt Takashi had lost just as much, if not more than himself thanks to organized crime. Ren took a great liking to Takashi and actively strove to protect him, even losing an eye to ensure his safety at one point, and took him under his wing. He started to train Takashi’s body and mind in the ways of the samurai, doing his best to try and impart a sense of honor and justice to the him that could make him the noble gentleman Ren was raised to be. The plan was to work together to destroy the Fiores, Takashi from the inside, Ren from out.

They spent years training together, and in the interim Ren started making a place for himself in Regnum, taking jobs from people in need for often little to no pay. Most of his earnings came from his day job as a couturier. When he was old enough, he opened up a tailory called Naganori, named after the king the Ōishi refused to betray, and soon made a name for himself as an expert at making bespoke clothing for anyone willing to toss him the coin. The job worked wonders for Ren, making inroads for him to meet important people across Regnum, most specifically in the Pokemon Wing. Ren found the stories of the Knights who onced used to protect the city of Regnum from evil aspirational, almost like the Ōishi of old, and briefly considered becoming a novice and working to earn that position. Of course, then he remembered that was foolish idea-- as soon as he and Takashi had earned their vengeance, he planned to leave. He had too many bad memories of this town, after all.

Ren and Takashi continued their training, but soon Ren started feeling concern for his brother-in-arms. He felt that he was becoming colder and crueler the more time he spent with the Fiores, especially after he managed to earn himself a position as adviser, and seemed to care less about meting out justice and more about vengeance. Constantly, Ren would remind Takashi was that the point was to systematically dismantle the Fiores, but Takashi seemed to grow more and more exasperated with that idea of earning his vengeance and chose his own way.

Takashi used a piece of advice Ren had inadvertently given him to start a war between the Fiore and a rival gang. The act certainly killed many Fiores, but also took the lives of many innocents who were unlucky enough to be caught in the crossfire. Ren was horrified, and his horror only grew when Takashi invited him in the don’s house and into his bedroom, where he proposed they slit the throats of the Fiore head and his wife while they were sleeping. Ren was aghast at the notion of killing a foe while they were at their most vulnerable and refused, as he felt this act, combined with the the untold amount of innocent deaths, would be completely dishonorable. Takashi had no such compunction against the crime and went ahead with the murder of the Fiore heads, fundamentally destroying the gang--and in Ren’s eyes, robbing everyone involved of true justice.

The killers of Ren’s parents were dead, yet Ren only ended up feeling hollow. In his eyes, he had failed Takashi and led him to a dark path that would only end in his destruction. For a time, their relationship was strained, but Ren refused to give up on his friend. He swore to stay in Regnum from then on for Takashi’s case and try to guide him back to the proper path, and he decided the best way to do this was to force them both into the Pokemon Wing, which he hoped would lead Takashi down a more noble path he was meant to be on. In time, Ren managed to earn the position of Pokemon Knight he found so tempting in the first place... but even then it wasn’t enough. Not as long as Takashi needed his aid.

Besides, their job wasn’t truly complete. The Saints were still out there. Perhaps, if they beat them, they would finally be able to earn true justice... and redemption for them both.
