Spring has finally surfaced in Regnum, the mass amount of ice and snow slowly beginning to vanish as the flowers take over. Though the rivers still contain some ice and many buildings have fallen to ground due to the earthquake, the colours of spring has managed to make the place seem a tad bit peaceful. Perhaps it's a sign that things will be getting better again soon.
click above for more information!
It came so suddenly and without warning throughout the dead of the night: A sudden pulse throughout the city, followed by another and another. By the time people knew what was happening, a large earthquake shook the city, causing buildings to tumble, grounds to crack and shift and, worse of all, the city borders to collapse. Many lives were lost, others injured and lives completely changed forever.

The power plant in Regnum is still down, but some groups have gotten together with electric Pokemon to help restore some of the electricity to the city. It is suggested not to walk the streets alone as the crime rates have sky rocketed despite the efforts of the Enforcement Wing. Phones and internet is still down, but people have started finding other ways to communicate for the time being. In good news, the weather has begun to warm up, the snow and ice finally melting. Sadly, the barrier is still blocking people from leaving the city.

Maybe coming to the park in the evening wasn't the greatest idea for someone still learning to make her own fireworks. Sure, there were fewer people around, and the pyrotechnics would look gorgeous if they worked. But Lacey was still struggling to make ones that didn't blow up in her face or prematurely launch in an unintended direction, so to try at night was risky since she couldn't see very well. But she had been in her chapel during the day, waiting for prospective patrons (and got none, as usual), so it wasn't like she could make time for practicing with her fireworks until now.

A few times, Lacey considered giving up the business. And each time she talked herself out of doing so by reminding herself how much money she would make when she finally got the trade down. It would be worth it in the long run, so she had to keep going! So, here she was, fireworks out and ready to be launched. The priestess had Ankaa nearby to act as a light source; however, the Rotom couldn't get too close, as it could potentially set off the fireworks with its flames or sparks. Lacey still couldn't see what she was doing too well, but some light was better than none. After she finished setting up, she recalled Ankaa and took out a match. After lighting it, she tested the first firework. "Three—" Before she even got to say "two", it had launched straight into the sky (which was unusual; most her duds flew off horizontally) and exploded, sending various golden sparkles across the dark atmosphere. That...was better than usual, though it was still a dud. Lacey regretted not noting what she did—she would have to remind herself to do that from now on.

As she prepared to test the other firework, she glanced around to make sure no one was in range. She probably should've done that earlier, but she was too focused on testing her pyrotechnics. Once confirming that she probably wouldn't hit someone should the next one be a dud, she lit it and began the countdown. "Three, two, on—" This time, the firework blew up right in her face. Fortunately, it had been far enough away that it only covered her visage with soot. The priestess coughed and reached for a washcloth to wipe her face off.

After a few more tries—all which were failures—Lacey sat herself on a bench and pulled out a thermos full of hot chocolate. She slowly sipped it as she glanced at the sky. The stars were becoming visible; the lack of lights in the park made them much easier to see than where she was back in the Northern District, even with the fog. Someday, she hoped she could make fireworks as marvelous as those stars.

It wasn't often that the GBG walked around these parts of town at night. Especially more recently. Too many things had been going on and with the whole dead body that had appeared, well...Altair just didn't want to take any chances. But nonetheless, he was out and about and pretty much alone. The only thing he had out with him was his Granbull. The canine was only slightly larger than himself, he had been luckily to come across an abnormally large sized Snubbull, but it made the prefect body guard for at night. Plus, Lachlan was like his right-hand man. He was always there for the small man.

He had been walking wth no real destination in mind until he saw the dud of a firework light up the sky. Fireworks? Who was setting off those? Whoever it was seriously needed help in that department. Without realizing it, his feet started to carry him in that direction. It was about the time that the one exploded in front of the girl that he arrived there. He had to stifle a laugh at the poor attempt at fireworks. Honestly, what was this girl doing? Even Lachlan gave a short huff of laughter at the failed attempt. Altair lifted his arm and leaned against the canine as it crossed its arms. Maybe they could stick around for a bit a see if she ever got a hold of how they worked.

She only tried a few more times before she seemed to give up and went to sit on a nearby bench. Altair tilted his head as he saw her head tip back. He was behind her so he had yet to be seen. But his head followed hers as he looked up at the night sky. He didn't always turn to look up at the sky, but now he wished he had. For right now it was quite nice. The minima lights in the park allowed them to shine just as bright as the fireworks this strange girl had been setting off. His eyes leveled back out to look at her before looking to where her stuff was on the ground. Perhaps this was why he felt the need to go on a walk. Perhaps he needed to help her. Pfffttt. A gang member helping a stranger with fireworks. He shook his head to himself before recalling Lachlan. Well...since he was here. As he walked up to her he let his presence be known. "What a beautiful sight." Of course he was talking about the stars, but as he got closer he noticed that he could be talking about her as well.

The person's sudden presence almost caused Lacey to jump. She glanced over at the young man. There hadn't been anyone here before—at least as far as she was aware—so had he just arrived? He hadn't seen her failed pyrotechnics, had he!? ...More importantly, what was it that he just said? Something about a "beautiful sight"? As those words registered in the priestess's mind, she could feel her cheeks starting to turn red. Fortunately, the lights weren't bright enough to illuminate her face, so it was unlikely the person could see. ...Anyway, she needed to calm herself fast. He was probably referring to the night sky, right? Yeah, that had to be it.

And yet, for some reason, part of Lacey's brain wanted her to confirm. "Were you talking about the stars? Orrrr, were you talking about me~?" Her tone was a mix of playful and seductive, as it usually was with men. And yet she immediately regretted asking him. After all, she had now set herself up to be complimented...or flirted with. No matter how many times men complimented or flirted with her, she still found herself getting flustered. It was a quirk she wished she could be rid of.

Admittedly, Altair had almost set himself up to be questioned about his choice of words. That didn't mean that he couldn't hear the tone in her voice. And that tone brought up a slight lopsided smile to his face. He felt the need to say that he had just been talking about the sky, but his mouth formed the words that his brain had tried to shut him off from saying. "Originally I was talking about the stars. But I can now see that it worked for you as well." There. Some truth as well as letting her know his new discovery. If only he could actually really see her face. Then he might've been able to say something that more suited her as an individual. His eyes drifted over to where her things lay. He found himself walking towards the items and squatting down to check things out. It wasn't like he was planning on stealing them. He was just interested.

"That wouldn't have happened to be your terrible attempt at a fireworks show, right?" He knew he was being blunt. But he also felt like that was the right way to go about this. It was a terrible display. And for someone who looked about the same age as himself...well she should've picked it up much sooner. "That was honestly child's play. Don't you have an instructor?" He knew that he was probably being confusing. First the compliment and now the insult, but you had to get people off their balance to really see how they acted.

Yup, there it was, the dreaded compliment. It wouldn't be so bad if Lacey's cheeks weren't instantly tinted crimson the moment the last word exited the man's lips. She opened her mouth to respond, but all that came out were quick breaths. Ahh, she really did bring this on herself. And in front of such a good-looking person, now that he was closer and could be more clearly seen. ...Wait, was he going through her stuff? Awestruck, the priestess watched him as he looked at her belongings. There was no way he was stealing her stuff right before her—not that there was much to steal, anyway—right?

He wasn't, in fact, stealing from her, but instead inquiring about the fireworks (if they could even be called that) that had gone off. Though, instead of "inquiring", it was more like he was bombarding Lacey with a sudden insult. She would've preferred he steal her stuff instead. Then again, at least she wasn't blushing anymore. "The hell would I set up a show without an audience!?" she snapped. The priestess also hadn't brought enough pyrotechnics along to even put on a display, but that wasn't really important. She was ready to yap, yap away like a cornered Growlithe might, telling the man off for his rudeness. But then he made his second remark, which completely shut the young woman up for the moment. Though the priestess still had a clear look of disdain on her face, she had to admit she never considered the idea of having an instructor. But then again, she also hadn't been in Regnum too long nor did she really like the idea of spending money on someone to teach her something she figured she could learn on her own.

After a moment, Lacey gave her response. "If I had an instructor, I wouldn't be doing this alone." Her tone, though much calmer than before, still clearly exhibited her exasperation. "I know I suck; don't have to f***ing rub it in." she grumbled, casting her gaze off to the side. What a shitty night this was turning out to be. Then again, it wasn't like she had too much luck since arriving here. Maybe she should've just remained in Kalos.

Ahhh. If only he had seen how she had flushed on the girls face. He might've kept up the compliments. But as it was, he was more focused on the items that he was shuffling through. As it was dark, and thus harder too see, his hand dug in his pocket before he pulled out a singular ball. A flash of light later and a Blitzle was standing at his side. He caught the girl out of the corner of his eye and gave her a little snort as a hello before turning back too Altair. "Phlegethon, a little light if you don't mind." Within seconds, the Blitzle's mane sparked with a little electricity. He kept up a steady source of it in order to give Altair light.

Now being able to see, his hands went into the motions of setting up the firework in the right away. Twisting certain wires this way, adjusting things that way, all-the-whilehe kept up his conversation with her. Though you could tell that he wasn't fully in tune to her as his voice was a bit lighter compared to moments ago. "You don't necessarily need an audience to put on a good display. Sometimes the best ones are the ones that are only for you." He always felt too much pressure when he had to put on a display for someone other than himself or his friends.

He gave a chuckle as he finished off the setup for the lone firework of hers. He pushed himself off the ground, the charge in hand, and started walking to her. Phlegethon's mane stopped discharging the electricty as he started walking besides his trainer. "You don't suck." A brief pause as he went back on his words. "You might suck, but there is potential for improvement there. The dud was a step in the right direction." He held out the charge too her before speaking again. "Try it this time." Although he had been the one to set it up, it was still her firework. He'd give her the honor and it would show her that a potential instructor wasn't too far away.

Though Lacey was rather perturbed at this point, she couldn't help but continue to watch the young man. A confused expression crossed her face as he called out his Blitzle. What the hell was he going to do, make a firework out of electricity? Instead, it was just using its sparks as a source of light while the other set up something. ...Wait, was he using her equipment? The priestess opened her mouth, ready to argue with him—and yet, a moment later, she closed it again. What was the point; not like she had a use for the fireworks. Might as well let him do what he wanted.

Lacey crossed her arms indignantly as she continued watching the man put together a firework. The way he set it up was different from how she had previously tried, or from what she could tell from what sparse light the Blitzle provided. ...Come to think of it, she hadn't put it together his way at all. She moved a little closer, trying to carefully observe what he was doing. He didn't really know how to make a proper firework, did he...? As he finished, the priestess backed away slowly. However, that seemed unneeded, as he approached her not long after. While he spoke, Lacey tried thinking of a cocky retort to his...encouragement? The priestess couldn't help but give him a quizzical look; that was meant to make her feel better, right? Or was it a backhanded insult? ...Damn, it was probably the former. She didn't like the sudden kindness again, but oh well.

Without a word, Lacey sauntered over to the firework. In her mind, she couldn't possibly see how this would work. Yet she figured it'd be good to humor him. She took out a match, struck it against a nearby stone, then lit the string before backing away. "Three... Two... One..." she muttered, half-expecting another explosion in her face. Instead, as soon as she finished saying "One", the pyrotechnic launched flawlessly into the sky and burst into a small, silver weeping willow. Needless to say, the priestess was absolutely awestruck. "How... How the hell...?" She watched the sparkling lights vanish into the night sky, then glanced at where the firework once stood. Of all the people she could potentially encounter in Regnum, had she really come across someone who actually knew how to work with pyrotechnics? And someone who was about her age, or so she guessed.

"Oi!" Lacey snapped around to face the man, her expression a mixture of confusion and aggravation. "How long have you been doing this!?" For all she knew, he was also new and wanted to rub it in her face. Thus, if he tried to dance around the question, she would continue to pursue the topic. There was no way he would get out of this one!

From where he stood, Altair wasn't able to see much of how she initially acted. He took a glance down to Phlegethon. The Blitzle even looked up to him. He was aware that Altair knew what he was doing, so the little nicker he gave was a confused one. He wasn't sure why his trainer was helping out a random stranger. But when the firework went off without a hitch, Altair couldn't help but to give a satisfied smirk. The weeping willow ones weren't his favorite, but they were sort of beautiful. Her reaction even made it all the more priceless.

Phlegethon gave a snort and shook his head as Altair laughed. Suddenly, she turned back around and Altair was quick to stop his laughter. His expression turned thoughtful for a few moments. "Hmmm....Since I was 17 or 16 years old? So that'd be five or six years. I had a good teacher in the beginning." There was a slight pause as he thought of the Warlord that brought him into the gang in the first place. After a moment of reminiscing he went to talk again. "How long have you been practicing?"

And though it seemed like that was where he was going to end things, instead he went to approach her once more. "Because I'd be willing to help you out..." he didn't think that he had to include the 'for a small price.' Obviously his service wouldn't be completely free. But perhaps they could come to some sort of agreement if she didn't wish to actually pay for it. He stuck out his hand since they had yet to even give each other names. "Altair Cypher at your pyrotechnic service!" His grin was wide as he really was being sincere about helping her...if she wanted it of course.

Admittedly, Lacey felt rather relieved that the young man seemingly hadn't picked it up, oh, say...less than a year ago or so. Her muscles began to relax and her emotions starting calming down as he continued to speak. The priestess couldn't help but quirk an eyebrow at his offer. It was a great opportunity for her; however, she was wary about these supposedly "no-strings attached" proposals. There was almost always something else involved—usually something that would've been a deal-breaker had it been included with the offer. Even if the man seemed nice and genuine, Lacey wasn't sure if she could trust him.

Luckily, there was a way to test whether he was worthy. The priestess extended her arm, her hand grabbing Altair's somewhat firmly for the handshake. "Lacey Colbert. Been at this for about a month," she said. Her tone indicated she was calmer; however, she still donned a serious expression. Once she had pulled her arm back, she continued, "I have been looking for a mentor. However, before I accept, I want to know one thing: What's the catch?" She decided being blunt was the best way to go; his reaction would likely determine whether his offer was sincere.

Altair was a little surprised, but in a good way, with the firmness of Lacey's handshake. A lot of the girls that he had met kept their handshakes soft and dainty. Although that made since because of the "stereotype" the firmer handshakes seemed to come along with a stronger confidence in oneself. Of course...that wasn't always true. But it did have some truth value to it. But only a month with no mentor. His eyes traveled back to the setup and nodded slightly. She seemed at about the right pace for someone with only that much under their belt.

The thing that gave him pause was her asking what the catch was. An eyebrow rose in confusion because he hadn't meant anything like that at all. "There really is none." He had enough money thanks to his job and not having to pay rent and setting off fireworks was fun to him. So having someone else to set off fireworks with would be even more fun. Plus, it gave him something to do that wasn't just GBG affiliated. Even Phlegethon seemed a little confused about it. "I could ask for something in return?"

But what? Money was a no. He wasn't one to randomly hook up. And he didn't really have anything else at the forefront of his mind. Unless... "If you don't want it to be free, how about a date? It's random for two nearly strangers, but." He shrugged his shoulders, a small grin starting to appear. "We could even use it just to talk over different techniques." There, that was fine right? It wasn't like Altair was blind. So far Lacey seemed like a fun person to be around and she was kinda cute. So why not just see if that would work out? Least she could say is "no" and Altair would still offer his services.

Altair's response prompted another raised eyebrow from Lacey. She found it difficult to believe he was telling the truth—not unless he was one of those super duper saccharine nice guys. ...But, given how he spoke to her earlier, she doubted it. Her expression defaulted to its resting position as he spoke again; part of her wanted to shout out that she "knew there were strings attached", but she refrained, decided to see what he had to say.

When Altair finally spoke, she listened carefully. Had he said just about anything else after "If you don't want it to be free", Lacey would've snorted and made a clever retort. However, she wasn't expecting, well...to be asked out on a date. Her cheeks flared up almost immediately, her eyes widening as she tried to process whether it was a joke or if he meant it in earnest. Judging by the smile he wore, it was probably the latter... Hmm, she could make this work, perhaps. "I-It's a deal... But only if you pay for my food!" She sputtered out her last words, her cheeks growing even redder. Come to think of it, he hadn't even mentioned them going to get something to eat. Still, she didn't think she'd mind going with him. After all, she'd get free lessons regardless. And Altair did seem like just the kind of person she'd be able to get along with, so it'd turn out well, maybe?

Altair didn't actually think that Lacey would accept his offer, so when her face flushed and her eyes widened, he got ready to perhaps hear her yelling about 'how wrong that was to ask something like that.' But when the opposite happened, a larger grin broke across his features. He didn't even mind that she basically stated what they would do, that saved him asking what was something she'd like to do. He gave a shrug of his shoulders. "I don't mind paying at all. What kind of guy would I be if I didn't pay after offering to take you on the date."

His paused for a few moments, his eyebrows furrowing in thought. "Ahhh, can I get your number or do you have some other way of contact?" He'd kinda need that in order to help her out anyways and he couldn't really pull up his work schedule right at that moment to see when he had a free day. While he had come out with nothing to do, now he'd be leaving with a date and someone to teach. It was weird how somethings worked out.

A small grin appeared on Lacey's face as Altair accepted her condition. She still felt a bit embarrassed about being asked out, but the sensation wasn't as great as earlier. Her cheeks were no longer flushed, and she was much calmer. As silence filled the air, she pondered what to say or do next. Luckily, he beat her to it, requesting her contact information. The priestess gave him a slight nod.

"Yeah. I'll get my phone; gimme a sec." She turned around and moved toward her bag, then bent down and began digging through it. After about half a minute, she pulled a small object out. Unlike most people, Lacey had an old-fashioned flip phone. Both it and her plan was cheap, and she had no intention of upgrading to a smartphone anytime soon. She began playing with it, searching for the window that displayed her number, email, and current address. If Altair scrolled down enough, he'd find her former address—the cathedral her mother headed back in Kalos—on there. Once the screen popped up, she turned the phone around and held it out for him to take. "I don't have texting or 'net privileges or anything, but I got plenty of minutes for calls," she said. "I also don't have a computer so I can't check my email often. I use the ones at the libraries." She wanted to purchase a laptop, netbook, or tablet at some point; however, she currently lacked the extra tender to do so. Such was the life of a priestess.

In all honesty, throwing out the date idea had been something that he hadn’t really done before. He couldn’t remember the last time that he actually went out on a date, so his mind was already trying to figure out what he would have to wear, what he would say, what place they would even go to…so many variables that could make or break this. If he screwed up, it could ruin their teacher-student relationship that would bud off of this little date. But if it went extremely well…well, he could cross that bridge when the time came.

As Lacey moved to go get her bag, Altair felt Phlegethon bump his head against him. Absentmindedly, he reached down and started rubbing along the top of his head, being careful to not touch his mane that was still producing enough electricity for them to see. When Lacey finally turned back towards him, his eyes went down to the phone that she was carrying. Although he had a smartphone, thanks to his job actually, he knew plenty of people that either had this same phone or none at all. It’s just what they could afford and he wasn’t one to judge for that. After all, he had been homeless at one point.

He nodded along to what she said while he took the phone and pulled out his own. Quickly he brought up the contact window, adding her name before adding her number and email address. If she couldn’t text, then he couldn’t send her links to online sites that had suggestions for how to improve some things. So for that he needed the email to send the links there. While he didn’t input her address, he did take note of where she lived and even where she lived before.

A grin broke out as he looked back up, holding out her phone as he pocketed his own. ”You used to live in Kalos? You’ll have to tell me about it sometime.” That was one of the things that sucked about being born in Regnum. He was stuck here for life and couldn’t explore what other things the world had to offer. And although he had never really been in the West, Granbull Gang territory was in the East, he did have a general idea of where she lived now. At least then he could pick her up for their date?

She watched Altair like a hawk, as if suspecting him to run off with her phone should she take her eyes off him for a moment. Lacey actually doubted he'd do that—he'd have no reason to when hers was borderline obsolete, plus he'd proven thus far that she could trust him. Still, she wanted to be certain he handled her phone with care; if something happened to it, she'd be fucked until she could afford a new one.

Fortunately, he treated it well and inputted his information, handing the old device back to her once finished. She smiled and took the phone, nodding a "thanks" as he pocketed his own. Using her hands, she opened the lips of her bag and dropped the cell phone in, then zipped it shut. Her gaze fell back on the other as she leaned over to pack up the rest of her things. "Sure, so long as you don't tell anyone bad I ain't from here. Gotta pretend to be a local so I don't get shipped off, ya know?" Though her voice took on a casual tone, she was serious about avoiding being trafficked off.

Once she'd finished packing her bag, Lacey lifted it up, strapping the handles around her shoulder. "Guess I'll be off. Y' better not show me up or nothin', got it!?" she said sternly, wagging her finger. The frown on her face quickly flip-flopped to a smile, indicating she wasn't being too serious about it. (After all, it wasn't like she'd be losing out if he did ditch her.) "See ya." Provided Altair had nothing else to say, she'd turn on her heel and set off for her home.
